Draught fans play an important role in thermal power plants by providing critical support to the various process activities related to power generation. Coal-fired thermal power plants systems use several types of process fans. Based on the size of the boiler or steamer the rating of the fan used differs and based on the type of air flow and the process involved different types of draught fans are used in thermal power plants. An attempt is being made to explain the types of draught fans used in thermal power plants in an easy to understand format in this article.

When we think about high-quality industrial fan manufacturing we may think of the right engineering design and usage of a quality motor. However, the truth is that every aspect of the fan needs to be vigorously considered and there is a need to use suitable and high-quality components.
In-house fan testing facility is very important for delivering reliable industrial fans that are durable, performing to the required capability with optimal power consumption.
When the testing facility is in-house, it is a lot easier to get the fan tested. When the facility is a 3rd party outside service, it is logistically, commercially, quality wise and transportation wise many challenges are there. As a result, the testing may be avoided by some manufacturers who do not have an in-house fan testing facility. This could create a fan that may be performing as per design expectation.
Centrifugal fans are a special type of industrial fans, used in several process industries and air pollution systems. Centrifugal fans are also called as blowers. They are ideal for high-pressure applications, quite different from the other type of fans, known as the axial fans.
In a typical power plant, heat energy is generated by boilers. Generally, boilers use industrial fans for the following reasons:
- To supply air required for combustion
- Remove products of combustion
- Deliver fuel to the burners
- Circulate gases for better heat transfer.
An industrial fan is different from a general-purpose fan in many ways. A general-purpose fan is used for residential and light commercial activity. An industrial fan is used for providing a large flow of air or gas to different industrial processes in various industries.
An industrial centrifugal fan is a type of mechanical equipment used for moving air or different types of gaseous substances during the manufacturing process. The centrifugal fan is also referred to as ‘blower’ and ‘squirrel confine fan’ (since the blowers appear as a hamster wheel). These fans increment the speed and volume of an air stream with the pivoting impellers.
